Precision growing: How Creepers Nursery supports designers under show level pressure

Precision growing: How Creepers Nursery supports designers under show level pressure

When it comes to delivering a show garden or high profile landscape project, timing is everything. Plants need to arrive in peak condition, structure needs to be just right, and every detail has to work in harmony, often against tight deadlines and changing conditions.

For the team at Creepers Nursery, supporting designers and landscapers through these high pressure projects is something that happens year round, long before a garden reaches the spotlight.

With more than 35 years in the industry and experience supplying projects ranging from private estates to RHS Chelsea Flower Show gardens, the nursery understands the level of planning, communication and horticultural precision required behind the scenes.

Growing with the end vision in mind

Unlike standard retail growing, supplying for show gardens and time critical projects often begins months, sometimes years in advance.

“We’re constantly thinking ahead,” explains Michael Buck, Head of Horticulture at Creepers Nursery. “Designers may come to us with a concept long before the build begins, and from that point we’re already considering plant availability, growth rates, timings, and how specimens will look at the exact moment they’re needed.”

This level of preparation can involve sourcing from specialist growers across the UK and Europe, reserving key stock well in advance, or nurturing plants on site to ensure they reach the desired size, shape and condition at precisely the right time.

The process is highly collaborative, with regular communication between nursery teams, designers and landscapers throughout the lifecycle of a project.

The pressure behind the scenes

While the finished gardens often appear effortless, the reality behind the scenes is fast paced and complex. Weather changes, transport logistics, delayed builds and shifting planting schedules all add pressure to the process.

“For show gardens especially, there’s very little room for error,” says Michael. “Plants are living products, so you’re constantly adapting. A spell of warm weather can push growth on faster than expected, while cold conditions can slow things down. Our job is to manage that as carefully as possible.”

At peak periods such as the lead up to RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the nursery becomes a carefully coordinated operation. Plants are monitored daily, checked for quality and health, watered and fed precisely, and organised for dispatch in strict sequences to match build schedules.

For larger specimen trees and structural planting, logistics become another major consideration. Many projects involve moving mature specimens that require specialist lifting equipment, careful transport planning and timed deliveries to ensure plants arrive in perfect condition.

More than just plant supply

One of the biggest shifts in recent years is the increasing expectation for nurseries to act as collaborative partners rather than simply suppliers.

“Designers want confidence that the nursery understands the vision,” explains Michael. “It’s not just about availability anymore, it’s about consistency, quality, reliability and having people on hand who genuinely care about the success of the project.”

That collaboration often includes walking sites with clients, discussing alternatives if certain plants become unavailable, advising on planting combinations and helping solve challenges during the build process.

We also know that designers are increasingly looking for impact planting that delivers an established feel from day one, placing greater importance on specimen sourcing and long term nursery relationships.

Delivering under pressure

Despite the challenges, the team says there is nothing more rewarding than seeing months of planning come together.

“There’s always a sense of pride when you see a project completed, especially knowing what’s gone on behind the scenes to make it happen,” says Michael. “Whether it’s a private garden or a show garden seen by thousands of people, it’s incredibly rewarding to know the plants have played such a key role in bringing a vision to life.”

As demand grows for more ambitious, design led landscapes, the importance of trusted nursery partnerships continues to grow alongside it. And for Creepers Nursery, precision growing remains at the heart of helping designers deliver exceptional spaces under pressure.
